International Dot Day at the Waterloo Urban Farmers Market
For the second year, International Dot Day will be celebrated at the Waterloo Urban Farmers Market in Waterloo, Iowa on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 8 a.m. to noon. It is a joint venture of the Waterloo Urban Farmers Market, the Waterloo Center for the Arts, and the Waterloo Public Library. The event was spearheaded by Jessica Young, a market board member and co-owner of Waterloo Bicycle Works.
The market is planning some fun activities, similar to last year, like sidewalk chalk, dot dauber painting, dot paper for participants to color with markers, guest readers and a story walk. Vendors in the market will be wearing dots and also offering product discounts to shoppers adorned with dot stickers. This year Terry Shay, founder of Dot Day, will be a reader of the book as a guest of the Waterloo Public Library. Because it is also the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month, Waterloo East High Spanish teacher, Julio Urdaneta, will be reading El Punto, the Spanish edition of The Dot.
Last year, Terry Shay was featured on the local cable show North End Update with hosts Rocki and Chaveevah talking about Dot Day at the Market. You can watch it here:
At last year’s event, the guest readers were Waterloo City Councilperson Nia Wilder along with members of the Waterloo Public Library staff.
